![]() ![]() Most other books I've seen have been very similar in their approach, and while this book travels the same ground as many of the other books it does so in a much more complete way, and with a lot more meat thrown in. This is a fantastic book on walking bass lines. It is very complete and addresses a lot of different harmonic or rhythmic contexts: whereas most walking books would introduce the blues, the 2-5-1 progression and the rhythm changes, and stop there, Mike Downes also addresses latin bass lines, 2-feel, ballads, broken bass lines, bossa nova, Giant Steps progressions, walking in 3/4, rhythmic embellishments, modal bass lines, etc. It provides ample examples of bass lines transcribed from the masters, and shows them all next to each other, providing unvaluable insight into the stylistic choices made by the great bassists of different periods of jazz.ģ. Books: In know many of them, but to me by far the best one is Mike Downes' " The Jazz Bass Lines Book", for the following reasons:ġ. Here is the first tutorial then you can find easily the other ones if you are interested. Not just tips like "do this on beat 1, do that on beat 2. Online material: Chris Fitzgerald has a wonderful series of video tutorials on walking bass. Use the search engine for posts with " walking bass" in the title. ![]()
